The New World's highest qualities of red wines produced from (predominantly) the merlot grape variety. Fuller, riper and with more alcohol (14+%) than their Bordeaux counterparts. Fairly accessible when young, with full cherry fruit and often a hint of chocolate. Can age but may become less interesting once the fruit starts to fade.
