Icon quality red Burgundy, hence from the pinot-noir grape variety. From single vinayeards classiefied as Grand Cru or of comparable repute. Highly individual in character. The 'rustic' category mainly encompasses crus like Clos de la Roche, the Corton grands crus and top premiers crus from Nuits St. georges. Often the (relatively) deepest coloured burgundies, that can be notoriously inaccessible at young age and will take years of bottle ageing before displaying their beautifully structured grandeur. Often profoundly earthy in character, always with noticeable tannins, yet bottle ageing will make these wines develop detailed fruit, a magnificent bouquet and a palate that will literally fan out. Intensely mineral when aged, with gamey notes. Exclusive and unfortunately expensive, but the 'rustic' category offers the 'lowest' priced wines at Grand Cru level.
